Some chemicals may be harmful to the environment and human health if not managed appropriately. Therefore; Chemwatch risk assessments characterises the risk poses to the environment by the proposed use of the chemical and provides control measures when the chemical needs to be managed to prevent, reduce or minimise the potential harm to the environment.

Our risk assessment logic considers exposure and effects. Exposure considers how a chemical enters and behaves in the environment and is evaluated by considering several factors such as use, frequency, chemical properties as well as how it is going to be released into the environment (i.e., through air, water, soil). The effects are then evaluated considering the data about the potential harmful effects the chemical may have in ecosystems.

In the risk assessment module, the discharge options (air, water, land) enable users to select the way the chemical is discharged and that selection will then trigger a control document; what is called control sheets which are guidance documents on best to use best controls based on the discharge mechanism.

To open the control documents, click on the CTRLDOCS icon . A pop-up window will display the respective document series for the control approach, guidance sheet, environment, etc. as shown in the example below. The marked sections display the respective applicable control documents based on the discharge selection and the relevant potential effects.

Selecting any of the control approach link(s) will render the respective control document for further reference on how best to apply those controls, e.g., the G400 series for control approach 4 general principles is shown below.
