What is chemicals management?

 

Chemicals management is a systematic approach that aims to reduce the risk associated with chemical hazards, throughout the chemical life cycle. This course is based on a holistic approach to chemicals management. It follows a step-by-step approach—from the initial identification of hazardous chemicals, through to the control and management of waste. 

 

This holistic approach is supported by the process known as the Chemicals Management Cycle of Change. The activities in each stage involve:

  • Understanding the situation
  • Identifying hazards/risks
  • Collecting data
  • Analysing causes
  • Developing and implementing measures
  • Evaluating and integrating change management into the organisation’s structure of business operations


What is the chemicals management course about?

 

This course provides learners who regularly work with and are in contact with hazardous substances, with increased knowledge and understanding of the following topics:

 • Chemical safety data sheets • Chemical labeling • Chemical handling and use • Safe storage of hazardous chemicals • Personal protective equipment • Transport requirements • Management of chemical risks • Hazardous waste • Basic principles of integrating chemicals management at the workplace. 

 

Employees will learn and understand chemicals management change readiness, basic steps in building a chemicals management process, the purpose and importance of the manifest requirements, analysis of causes and gaps in managing chemicals, and hazard and risk assessment criteria.


How many units of competency are covered in this course?

 

To complete the “Course in Chemicals Management”, the learner must complete 4 core units. A Statement of Attainment will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

The units of competency are:

  • BSBWHS431 - Develop processes and procedures for controlling hazardous chemicals in the workplace 
  • BSBWHS531 - Implement and evaluate the system of work for managing hazardous chemicals
  • BSBWHS308 - Participate in WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
  • NAT10895001 - Manage hazardous chemical waste within a workplace

What is the time frame for learners to complete the course?

 

The course time frame is 6 months to complete. The course is self-paced and online so it is entirely up to the student to manage their own time to ensure they finish the course content and assessments before the end of the 6 months. The suggested amount of study will depend on the learners’ previous experience and skill level.

 

What are the benefits of doing the course?

How is the course delivered?

 

The course is available through our learning management system as online, self-paced learning that is structured into three modules:

  • Chemicals management process and assessment of risks
  • Managing chemical risks and control measures
  • Management of hazardous Chemical waste


Is the student required to complete assessments?

 

To receive competency and certification, the learner must complete the modules and corresponding assignments (assessments). Successful completion of this course will require learners to engage in unsupervised activities including:

  • Completing written assignments
  • Completing self-study to revise and reinforce areas of knowledge
  • Workplace practice/application of skills and knowledge acquired through role plays and workplace simulations.
  • Researching to gain up-to-date industry information
  • Reviewing organisational policies and procedures

 

Is the Course in Chemicals Management applicable to Australia only?

 

The course is accredited in Australia, however, anyone in the world can do the course through our learning management system available online. Much of the content is applicable globally but students will have to consult their regulator for specifics on local regulations. The course does not advise on specific regulations for this reason as every jurisdiction is different.


Is the Course in Chemicals Management accredited in Australia?

 

Yes. The “Course in Chemicals Management” is accredited in Australia. The course is nationally recognised in Australia and once completed and deemed to be competent, a certificate (Statement of Attainment) will be issued.


Is a certificate issued upon completion of the Course in Chemicals Management?

 

Yes. A Statement of Attainment is issued to the learner who has completed and submitted all the assignments relevant to the course and has been deemed competent. The competent learner will be notified upon successful completion of the course. Learners will receive their certificate by email.

Yes, this course can assist learners in gaining knowledge about compliance-related requirements as per the WHS regulations, however, the course does not cover all WHS regulations, it is the responsibility of the learner to build more knowledge by reading the respective laws on what is relevant to their work/business. The course is accredited in Australia and uses GHS classification as the main source of hazard identification. However, the principles behind chemicals management can be applied globally, such as inventory creation and risk management. The risk control approaches are also applied globally (i.e., Control Banding).

 

Which country is the chemicals management course accredited to?

 

The course is Accredited by the Australian Government. Such accreditations are recognised by other Governments around the world (as are graduate certifications, and university degrees for example).

 

When does the chemicals management course start?

 

This course starts as soon as your enrolment in the course is confirmed. The course in chemicals management is entirely online and self-paced. The course information will be sent via email; which will also contain details on how to log in to the learning management system and access the course. It's up to you how you manage your time, and the course will retain your position if you stop at any time. Chemwatch provides 6 months to complete all course content and assignments.
