The ILO Risk Assessment provides guidance documents or ILO Toolkit sheets for reference once a risk assessment has been completed.
Risk assessment tasks are provided by default based on the ILO Toolkit. A control approach document sets the principles of the control approach and common activities or processes that may address inhalation, skin, environment, safety, general maintenance. The ILO Toolkit provides task control sheets based on the respective control approach.
Task sheets are described for given tasks as provided in the risk assessment module task panel below.
Task-specific control
For each control approach there is a general Control Document which sets out the principles of the control approach. In addition, a set of dedicated guidance sheets for common activities or processes are available in the ILO Tool Kit. These may address:
- Inhalation
- Skin
- Environment
- Safety
- General Maintenance
- Checklists
To find the right guidance sheet you will only need to find the right task description and determined control approach number. For each control approach there is a general sheet which sets out the principles of the control approach and a set of dedicated guidance sheet or sheets for common activities or processes. The table below contains the index of task guidance sheets for control approaches 1 – 4 to find the matching control and respective task sheet. If you cannot identify a task sheet that matches the task being carried out, use the general sheet for the control approach and apply the principles described to follow the task.

Control Guidance Sheets for Pesticides
In the ILO Tool Kit for Pesticides, there are separate guidance sheets for materials that have been identified as pesticides. The table below provides the task sheets links and task descriptions.
Task Description | Task Control Sheet |
Concentrate dilution | |
Application (spraying and dusting)
Fumigation | |
Using poison baits? | |
Disposing of used containers? |
Skin and Respiratory Protection
If the substance has been allocated to the Skin Hazard Group, the task sheet Sk100 must be used. When undertaking a task where the guidance sheets suggests that the respiratory equipment is appropriate, e.g., cleaning up a spill, the task sheet R100 should be used.
Task Description | Task Control Sheet |
How to reduce skin contact with hazardous substances
Selection and use of respiratory protection equipment |
Safety and Environmental Issues
The task sheets provided above are designed to protect human health against harmful effects caused by high exposures to hazardous substances, however, many substances can also cause harm by other factors such as burning or harm the environment. Other situations can arise from harm due to machinery and in such cases, often refer to a system of work (or permit to work system) for maintenance activities. Key features of this system are provided in sheet S100. Waste materials can also be discharged to land, air or water and in this case, task control sheets (E- series) can be used as they provide advice on how to reduce the damaging emissions. The table below lists the safety and environmental task guidance sheets.
Sheet Description | Task Control Sheet |
Safety | |
Key features of Lock-out/tag-out system
Environment | |
Control of emissions to air
Control of emissions to water
